Rick Recht: Rockstar, Philanthropist, and Community Leader

For decades, Rick Recht has been a transformative force in Jewish music and leadership. His journey from a traditional upbringing to rockstar, to Jewish leader is both inspirational and aspirational.

A Transformative Moment

Rick's story begins in St. Louis, where he developed a strong Jewish identity attending a conservative congregation. In high school, his involvement with NFTY (Jewish youth group) laid a foundation that would later define his career. After graduating from the University of Southern California and the Music Institute, Rick embarked on a secular music career, touring nationwide and sharing stages with renowned acts like Chris Rock, The Samples, and many others.

The pivotal moment came when his future wife, Elisa, convinced him to be a song leader at a Jewish overnight camp. Initially reluctant, Rick found the experience transformative. "I’m not the right guy," he had said, but the camp experience blew his mind and changed his path. The next summer, he played at 50 Jewish camps, and soon he was performing at 150 Jewish events annually. Elisa, a brilliant educator, saw his potential and became his partner in both work and life. They've been married for 24 years, raising two boys while working and traveling together. Now, as empty nesters, they continue to grow their nonprofit and work around the country, spending their free time hiking and exploring the great outdoors.

From Musician to Mentor

Realizing the profound impact of music on young people and adults alike, Rick dedicated himself to strengthening Jewish identity through music. His debut Jewish album, Tov, marked a shift from secular to Jewish music, blending pop with Hebrew, Jewish text, and social responsibility. This transition highlighted Rick’s unique ability to connect and inspire.

Rick's commitment to Jewish leadership and education led him to establish several innovative and groundbreaking initiatives. As a skilled leader, Rick runs Judaism Alive which is the nonprofit umbrella for:

  • Songleader Boot Camp (SLBC): A premier national leadership training conference.

  • Jewish Rock Radio (JRR) and JKids Radio: Their mission is to use music to engage Jewish youth and young adults, while promoting Jewish artists and music.

  • Jewish Star: Teaches skills that foster leadership, including marketing, negotiations, inclusion, and advocacy.

Additionally, he serves as Artist in Residence at United Hebrew Congregation in St. Louis, Missouri.

Building a Legacy

Rick’s mission remains clear: "My greatest goal is to identify, support, and train new Jewish artists, educators, and leaders who will provide inspiration and connection for generations to come."

His programs focus on that mission and the results speak for themselves. Here are a few highlights of the impact his programs are having:

  • More than 72 Jewish Star participants currently hold leadership roles at North American camps and youth groups.

  • Over 100 program participants are in leadership roles in North American synagogues.

  • 93% of program participants said the program was the most valuable mentoring experience they've had.

  • Over 4,500 individuals have participated in Judaism Alive leadership training programs.

  • A formal evaluation by the Brandeis Cohen Center found that more than 450,000 people have been impacted directly by the leadership training at SLBC.

Rick’s innovative approach extends well beyond music. He applies successful for-profit strategies to the nonprofit sector, such as rewarding high performers with incentives and bonuses. "We need to reward excellent outcomes like they do in the for-profit world. Money is not everything, but it is a motivator," he explains.

Vision for the Future

Rick maintains a laser focus on expanding his impact. His vision includes developing a pipeline of 500 new Jewish leaders in the next five years through initiatives like the Jewish STAR program. With Rick’s can-do attitude, work ethic, and network I’m sure he will surpass those goals.
