Issue 2: Brantley Boyett, President/Co-founder, Giving Docs

In the world of philanthropy, technology is rapidly transforming the landscape. One standout in this space is Giving Docs, an innovative online estate planning platform designed exclusively to help nonprofit organizations enhance their legacy giving efforts. By providing tools for creating wills, trusts, and more, Giving Docs enables nonprofits to secure substantial legacy gifts from their supporters, ensuring a lasting impact for future generations.
Giving Docs' journey began in Austin, Texas, where Brantley had been practicing law for a decade. He wanted to work as an attorney in the tech space, so he decided to attend a hackathon.
Hackathons are events where participants pitch ideas, developed over a short period, and compete for the top spot. "I pitched the idea for Giving Docs, and as we progressed through the rounds, it became clear we were onto something.” Brantley recalls. Winning the hackathon validated his vision and marked the beginning of Giving Docs.
Backed by Behavioral Science
What sets Giving Docs apart in the competitive nonprofit tech space is its unique model. Unlike other platforms, Giving Docs is not consumer-facing. They partner directly with nonprofits, providing them and their donors with exclusive access to its estate planning tools. "We want to partner with our clients to help them serve their donors better," Brantley explains. "We hire experts in the planned giving space and offer the best service and products to help nonprofits raise legacy donations."
Rooted in behavioral science, Giving Docs collaborates with the Center for Advanced Hindsight at Duke University to research ways to make people healthier, wealthier, and happier. "We know there's a connection between being philanthropic and happy, and those who give are often wealthier too," Brantley notes. By leveraging science, Giving Docs helps organizations raise endowment dollars, contributing to the donors' sense of fulfillment and well-being.
Impact and Average Gift
The impact of Giving Docs is significant. While it's hard to pinpoint an average gift, data shows that the typical legacy gift facilitated by Giving Docs is around $88,000, with donors often listing 2.2 nonprofits in their wills. This substantial support can be transformative for many organizations, providing them with the resources needed to further their missions.
Transitioning from law to the nonprofit sector, Brantley was struck by the passion and dedication of nonprofit staff and donors. "Planned giving isn't glamorous. No one likes to talk about death. But it's crucial. 10% of nonprofit revenue comes from legacy gifts," he noted. There is tremendous potential for growth, and Giving Docs is at the forefront of unlocking this potential.
The Tech Philanthropy Landscape
Brantley envisions exciting developments in the tech philanthropy space. "Tech firms are making it easier for people to give through various vehicles. I see this trend continuing with significant advances in stock, donor advised funds, and even cryptocurrency." He also commented, “AI should help the role of gift officers, making their work more efficient and effective.”
From Austin to Durham
Brantley's journey took him from Austin to Durham, NC, when Giving Docs partnered with Dan Ariely’s behavioral science lab at Duke University. Brantley shared, "Durham is similar to Austin in many ways—it's a large town anchored by a university, with interesting tech firms, and a small-town feel. Plus, there's great music, arts, and of course, the Durham Bulls."
And as Brantley continues his search for the best breakfast taco, he might have found a winner in Durham. Enthusiastically, "Lady Gold Tacos are fantastic. They use Fritos instead of tortilla chips, add some bacon, and it's really good!"
Conclusion
Giving Docs is revolutionizing legacy giving by combining technology, behavioral science, and a deep understanding of the nonprofit sector. With its platform and dedicated team, Giving Docs is helping organizations secure legacy gifts that are vital to their sustainability and success.
