Jenna’s story is nothing short of extraordinary. She is a cancer survivor, civil rights advocate, world traveler, visionary founder, and so much more.

With a misdiagnosis of Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2010, Jenna’s world was turned upside down. Because she wanted children, the first order of business was fertility, which quite possibly saved her life. While going through the process, doctors discovered she actually had Grey Zone Lymphoma. The disease was so rare that it had affected fewer than 200 people at the time. Jenna felt some comfort knowing her doctor at Northwestern had seen the disease before.

How Twist Out Cancer Began

Shuffling between her house and the hospital, completely exhausted, isolated, and scared, Jenna found joy in dancing. “My goal was to create a video of me dancing. I wanted to do an homage to the 90’s with moves like the Running Man, but I didn’t have the energy for those moves. However, I could do “Chubby Checker’s The Twist.” She realized it’s something almost anyone could do.

The Twist, a simple dance move, became her lifeline. She shared her story and invited others to join her, creating a viral movement that brought people together. Jenna remarked, “I could not believe how many people saw the video and reacted so positively. I know that doesn’t always happen with social media. I was blown away by the support I received back.” This initiative built awareness and empowered others to share their own struggles and find hope in collective strength. Jenna continued, “The joy and energy of this experience was inspiring. And I can’t even tell you the stories that poured in. People opening up about their struggles was an incredible moment.”

The Birth of Twist Out Cancer

Having worked in the nonprofit sector for years, Jenna's experience with the Anti-Defamation League and other organizations had equipped her with the skills to lead her own initiative. Her battle with cancer instilled a newfound fearlessness in her. With nothing to lose, she launched Twist Out Cancer, a venture fueled by her desire to find meaning and help others suffering.

From its inception, Jenna embraced failure. She commented, “Trial and error are great teachers. I realized I needed help in certain areas like budgeting and accounting.” Jenna understands the importance of delegation and the value of relying on others, as she has built a resilient and dynamic organization.

Brushes With Cancer

One of Twist Out Cancer's flagship programs, Brushes with Cancer, pairs artists with individuals touched by cancer to create art that reflects their journey. This unique collaboration fosters healing and empowerment for both the artist and the individual affected by cancer. The program culminates in celebratory art exhibitions and auctions, showcasing the powerful stories and connections formed through art.

Jenna shared amazing stories of artists and survivors who were paired up and formed amazing relationships. Jenna commented, “It’s amazing the bonds these people develop.” She added, “Art therapy works. There are so many benefits, like helping with depression and anxiety.”

Another cornerstone of Twist Out Cancer is Twistshops—art therapy-focused workshops designed to promote healing and emotional recovery through creative expression. These workshops provide a safe space for cancer survivors, caregivers, and supporters to process their experiences and find solace in art. Led by licensed art therapists, Twistshops have been instrumental in reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress related to cancer.

Looking Forward

As Twist Out Cancer continues to grow, the demand for its programs exceeds its current capacity. Jenna envisions expanding the organization's reach through increased funding, additional staff, and partnerships with other licensed entities. She remains committed to offering these transformative programs free of charge to those touched by cancer, relying on the generosity of the community to sustain and expand their impact.

Jenna’s journey from cancer survivor to founder and CEO of Twist Out Cancer is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and community. Her story is an excellent example of taking your darkest moments and using that struggle to illuminate the lives of thousands.

In addition to her day job, Jenna serves as a mentor with Imerman Angels, providing support for other individuals diagnosed with Grey Zone Lymphoma cancer. She is an ROI fellow with the Schusterman Foundation. Her accolades include being named a Health Hero by Philadelphia Magazine and a Social Innovations finalist in entrepreneurship. Jenna’s story was selected as a top ten best read by Mashable and has been featured in ForbesCNN, the New York Times, the Los Angeles TimesThe Lancet Hematology, and the Wall Street Journal.

In her free time, Jenna spends time with her beautiful family. Adventures with her husband, Dr. David Shersher, and their two daughters, whom she describes as miracles, are a priority! To support or learn more about Twist Out Cancer, visit: Twist Out Cancer.
